Nintendo of Japan has just sent out an announcement with the first details regarding the successor to the Nintendo DS. Tentatively called the 3DS, it is a portable system that can play 3D games without requiring glasses.
Even though the company's DS console continues to dominate monthly sales charts, with a new design (the DSi XL) due out next week, Nintendo has announced today that it will be starting its next portable console generation within the next year. The code-named 3DS will be coming out in Japan by March 2011, with an unveiling of the product planned for E3 2010.
The specifications of the product are still very much a mystery, though the press release does divulge a few details. The 3DS will be able to display games in 3D, though it won't require glasses like the technologies currently being used in movie theaters and planned for HDTVs. Much like the Game Boy Advance and the original Nintendo DS did at launch, the 3DS will be backwards compatible with the previous portable generation's games. DS cartridges and DSiWare downloads will be playable on the 3DS, though it's currently unknown if current DSi owners will need to repurchase downloads on the new platform.
